Stay Safe

Safety Planning Guide

A safety plan is a personalized set of steps to help you stay safer in dangerous situations. Here are key areas to think about.

Create a Safety Plan

Identify safe exits from your home, memorize emergency numbers, and identify neighbors or friends who can help in a crisis. Plan where you will go if you need to leave quickly.

Secure Important Documents

Keep copies of your ID, passport, Social Security card, birth certificate, and immigration documents in a safe place outside the home — with a trusted friend or in a safe deposit box.

Guard Your Digital Privacy

Use a private browser window when researching your options. Clear your browser history after visiting sensitive websites. Consider using a different device than one your abuser has access to.

Build a Support Network

Identify at least two trusted people (friend, neighbor, coworker) who know your situation and can help. Even a single person who knows what is happening can make a critical difference.

Financial Safety

Open a bank account in your own name if you don't have one. Keep a small amount of emergency cash accessible. Know where your abuser's financial records are stored in case you need them later.

Know Your Rights

You have the right to call 911, apply for a protective order, and file for VAWA protection — regardless of your immigration status. Police cannot deport you for calling for help.
